Indianapolis —During today’s Annual Luncheon at the Indiana Roof Ballroom, the Hummingbird Charitable Foundation announced that Second Helpings, Out of a Jam, and Urban Seeds have each been awarded $40,000 to support their work fighting food insecurity across Indiana. The announcement was made during a check presentation before an audience of community leaders, partners, and supporters.
This year, the Foundation selected food insecurity as its philanthropic focus, choosing to recognize organizations that are not only distributing food, but also building long‑term, community‑driven solutions that go beyond traditional food pantries. Each of the three nonprofits honored today is reshaping how Hoosiers access nutritious food, education, and opportunity.
“These organizations are doing extraordinary work to fight hunger in ways that go far beyond providing food. They are building skills, restoring dignity, and creating long‑term solutions for families across Indiana. The Hummingbird Charitable Foundation is incredibly proud to support their missions and to stand alongside them as they work to end hunger in our state.”
—Karen Pence, Founder, Hummingbird Charitable Foundation
A Program Highlighting Leadership and Impact
The luncheon program featured remarks from former Second Lady of the United States and Foundation Founder Karen Pence, who spoke about the rising need for hunger‑relief efforts in Indiana and thanked each organization for the meaningful work they do every day. She emphasized the Foundation’s commitment to uplifting organizations that are creating long-term solutions and changing lives in their communities.
Representatives from each nonprofit also addressed attendees, sharing the ways this funding will help them expand their reach at a time when demand continues to grow.
“Second Helpings is incredibly thankful to be included in the Hummingbird Foundation luncheon and to be a grant recipient this year. As hunger in our community continues to rise, we were humbled that this year’s luncheon focused on food insecurity and to see so many in attendance who have a deep concern for Hoosiers and who want to combat food insecurity alongside us. Thank you to everyone who worked together to put on this meaningful event.” —Linda Broadfoot, CEO, Second Helpings
“Urban Seeds is grateful to the Hummingbird Charitable Foundation for highlighting organizations that support food security through culinary programming. The generous award will help us purchase more Hoosier-grown ingredients and empower our community to prepare and share nourishing food.” — Maria Marton, Executive Director, Urbans Seeds
“Out of a Jam is pleased and honored to be able to serve alongside the Hummingbird Foundation in an effort to make lives better here in Indiana.” —Paula Kaufman, Out of a Jam
Indiana’s Growing Food Insecurity Crisis
Food insecurity continues to escalate across the state. According to Feeding America’s latest data, more than 1 million Hoosiers are food insecure, including nearly 300,000 children—marking the first time in at least five years that Indiana has surpassed the one‑million‑person threshold.
In Central Indiana, additional research shows that over half of residents experienced food insecurity in the past year, with many reporting skipped meals or limited access to fresh, healthy food. These numbers make it clear just how much we need organizations that are tackling hunger from every angle, meeting immediate needs while also working on long‑term solutions.
The Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to every sponsor, donor, and attendee whose support made today’s check presentation possible. Together, we are helping ensure that more Hoosier families have access to the nourishment, dignity, and opportunity they deserve.
